Lowlands 2026: The Year the Ticket War Didn't Happen

Lowlands — A Campingflight to Lowlands Paradise — returned to the fields of Biddinghuizen from August 21 to 23, 2026, and something unusual happened: the festival did not sell out. For the first time in years, there was no frantic online scramble, no crashed servers, and no "sold out" sign within minutes. Instead, roughly 60,000 visitors found noticeably more breathing room between the twelve stages — and most of them seemed to love it.

The Ticket War That Wasn't¶

Just a year earlier, Lowlands 2025 sold out in a record 23 minutes. This edition was a completely different story. Two weeks before the gates opened, the festival reported that 88% of tickets had been sold — leaving an estimated 7,800 of the 65,000 weekend tickets still available. Add hundreds of resale tickets and it was clear the servers would survive the sale this time.

A weekend ticket cost €365 (day tickets don't exist), and tickets remained available right up to and during the event. For the organisation that is a commercial setback, but for visitors it was a liberation: the famous kilometre-long route between the Alpha and Bravo stages suddenly felt like a stroll rather than a pilgrimage.

More Room, Better Flow¶

The extra space was no accident. New director Camiel Le Rutte, in his first Lowlands as the person ultimately responsible, had prepared a series of changes. The Heineken stage stayed open longer at night, supported by extra toilet facilities, to spread the crowd better across the terrain and relieve congestion at the packed Bravo tent — all while staying within the noise limits. A control room with cameras and even a safety drone monitored visitor flows around the clock.

Not everything went smoothly: departure day brought complaints of too few shuttle buses and queues stretching for hours. But the overall verdict from both visitors and the organisation was strikingly positive. Le Rutte: "I don't think selling out is the only criterion for success."

New Leadership, New Direction¶

Le Rutte took over from Eric van Eerdenburg and is deliberately steering Lowlands back toward its alternative roots: more guitar, indie and alternative acts, without abandoning the big pop names. The demand was clearly there — also among younger visitors. At night, the X-Ray tent experimented with grittier, more obscure live programming, an experiment that "tastes like more."

The terrain itself is next. Ten years after the arrival of the current Alpha, Bravo and Armadillo stages, Le Rutte wants a major redesign of the site: visitor flows, backstage and frontstage areas, even the green strips. From October, his team will work out the plans, with this year's redesigned Planet middengebied — set up like a city park — pointing the way.

The Music¶

The headliners delivered: Tyler, the Creator on Saturday, Lorde on Sunday — whose show was widely called one of the best of the festival — and New Wave, with Turnstile, KNEECAP, Parcels, Royal Blood, Major Lazer, Antoon, Blood Orange, Viagra Boys, José González and Sombr completing the bill.

Reviewers singled out the Dutch rap act IJsland, who packed the Bravo with anthems like "Likken aan de Laars"; S10, who staged her rock opera "Mijn Haren Ruiken Naar Vuur" with a school choir and a surprise appearance by Froukje; Kelis's divisive Alpha set; the gabber-meets-black-metal crossover of Terzij de Horde with Jeroen Flamman in the X-Ray; and the debut of new Dutch trio Radio Z. Outside the music, Philip Vermeulen's trance-inducing art installation "Chasing the Dot" became the talk of the weekend.

A Film Shot on the Festival Grounds¶

Lowlands 2026 also served as the set for a feature film in the spirit of the romantic classic Before Sunrise: a love story of two Lowlanders who experience the festival's flow together. The project was initiated years ago by Eric van Eerdenburg, was tested over two editions, and finally secured financing. Filmed over the weekend with cameras woven into the festival itself, it is scheduled for release as one of the major Dutch cinema releases in spring 2027 — with cameos from veterans of the old Lowlands team.

Looking Ahead¶

Le Rutte said the reactions to the extra space will be taken into account for next year, though no target visitor count is set. Whether Lowlands will return to instant sell-outs or consciously opt for a roomier edition remains to be seen. Either way, 2026 proved that a slightly calmer Lowlands can feel like the festival at its best.
